What Is Sclerotherapy?

As you get older, all sorts of things happen to your body. Your hair changes, your skin changes, and even your veins change. You may have noticed thin, wispy-looking veins or thick, twisty-looking veins starting to sprawl along your legs. Those are spider veins and varicose veins.

While both of these conditions are usually harmless and may not require medical intervention, you still may wonder how in the world to get rid of them. The answer? Sclerotherapy, a form of vein therapy that Dr. George Mutafyan uses to reduce the size and appearance of spider and varicose veins so you can show off smooth-skinned legs.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is considered the treatment of choice for spider veins and varicose veins. Dr. Mutafyan injects a solution directly into your affected veins, and the solution causes your veins to collapse. Your body then circulates blood through other veins, which over time reduces the size and pigment of your treated veins.

Who can get sclerotherapy?

Essentially anyone with spider veins or varicose veins can undergo sclerotherapy treatment. Of course, there are sometimes exceptions, but Dr. Mutafyan covers all of those bases during your consultation appointment. You might seek sclerotherapy if you:

What to expect during sclerotherapy

Of all the medical and aesthetic treatments out there, sclerotherapy remains one of the simplest. Sclerotherapy is non-invasive, so you don’t experience any incisions or other surgical procedures.

Dr. Mutafyan simply injects the sclerosant (the solution) into your affected veins. In some cases, he might inject the solution into lymph vessels, which carry lymphatic fluid.

The sclerosant aggravates your blood or lymph vessels and creates microtraumas, which eventually cause your vessels to scar. Because of the irritation of the fluid vessels, you may experience a slight burning or tingling sensation, though many patients feel nothing at all.

Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure with minimal downtime, meaning you can leave right after your appointment and get back to your usual activities. You may need to wear a compression garment over the treatment site to prevent too much blood from flowing back into the treated veins.

What to expect after sclerotherapy

Recovery from sclerotherapy is quick and easy, just like the procedure itself. You may have some tenderness or bruising at the treatment site, but you shouldn’t experience any real pain or changes to your normal schedule.

Over time, your veins shrink in size and dissipate in color. You might need multiple sclerotherapy treatments to fully close your spider or varicose veins and diminish their appearance. Dr. Mutafyan helps you determine the best course of treatment.
